WHY
Cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the nation’s No. 1 and No.4 killers, and Nevada’s No. 3 and No. 4 killers. My Heart. My Life. is a new national movement designed to get everyone to embrace an overall healthier lifestyle in order to improve cardiovascular health. The goal is to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20% by the year 2020.
Last year, more than a million walkers raised over $100 million to fund lifesaving research and education efforts in over 300 Heart Walks across the country. Funds raised at the Heart Walk help place up-to-the-minute research into doctor’s hands, explore groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research and relay life-saving information to those who need it most.
Research funded by the American Heart Association has yielded or contributed to many important innovations such as CPR, pacemakers, bypass surgery, the heart-lung machine, surgical techniques to repair heart defects, and life-extending drugs like clot-busters. These and other advances are making it possible for many people to call themselves “survivors.” Through Heart Walks across the country the American Heart Association will create hope, inspire change and celebrate success.
The 2012 Heart Walk is nationally sponsored by SUBWAY Ò restaurants and Jenny Craig, and locally presented by Renown. Other local sponsors include Saint Mary’s, IGT, Waste Management, Northern Nevada Medical Center, Champion Chevrolet and Meadows Bank.
The registration fee for the professionally timed 5K run is $40. For more information, contact danielle.hammons@heart.org or visit www.nevadaheartwalk.com.
