Fernley News Network: Taking the Community To A New Level

Whether I endorse or oppose having the Moustache Pozzolan Quarry in Fernley is not the main reason for writing this letter. My purpose is to expose the manipulation and distortion of facts being circulated. To be blunt, I am against the latest presentations of “half truths” used to mask the self-serving hidden agendas from some individuals.

These people rely on our knee-jerk reaction of the “Yesterday’s Popular Opinion” that all forms of our government are always corrupt, and are counting on us to blindly agree with them. Not this time. I will not be manipulated by the outdated “political” tactics of the past.

The latest circulated letter represents brilliant and methodical examples of “half-truths” and accusations designed to create unwarranted fear and promote a false lack of trust regarding our City‘s governing officials.

The “not in my backyard” position is more obvious than you wanted it to be. As I see it, this opposition immediately loses credibility when it contains undeserved attacks against our fellow residents.

Is your position so weak that the only way it will get support and survive is with using deceptive tactics?

Let’s be fair here. If you expect others to give you the complete truth and every detail of every fact, shouldn’t you practice the same principles that you demand from them?

The driving force that would allow Nevada Cement to proceed will not be from the City of Fernley. The longest and strongest barrier will be from (MSHA) Mining Safety and Health Administration. They will say when to jump, and how high.

To give you a better understanding of, and illustrate a fair comparison of how MSHA operates, try this: If MSHA had authority over the housing industry, they would evict every resident from their home for the numerous safety violations that exist according to their regulations.

The carefully worded accusation that our City’s planning commission acted against Fernley’s best interests is nothing short of verbal abuse and is just plain wrong. The planning commission and the City Council have not tried to slip one “under the radar” on us. Based on the verified documentation and the fact that Federal and State agencies will aggressively enforce strict regulations, the planning commission (with added stipulations) allowed the special use permit application to proceed to the next level.

Deciding in favor of the Moustache Pozzolan Quarry does not give Nevada Cement any clout or guarantee that they will be able to proceed with the project. City approval on the special use permit is only the beginning of a long process of complying with endless and strict requirements.

Regarding dust control, Nevada Cement will be held to a higher set of standards than any of the other businesses in Fernley.

As an afterthought, the recently circulated educational material generates awareness concerning potential health risks. It provides evidence to support better enforcement of existing dust control regulations for the health and safety of Fernley. Presently, our school children are subjected to fugitive dust, from man-caused sources, that are less than three blocks away. These projects remain obligated by law, to provide dust control for that property.

This is not stated to distract you. It is from our mutual concern that this gets a seat at the same table.
